Hey guys I have a newly acquired '00 fxdx and have been searching for days to find a sissy bar. I had a bid on one on ebay and lost by $2.50 for the detachable plates and sissy bar with pad (all black). My questions are, does anyone know if there are any other years/models that are interchangeable with mine whether it be detachable or not and I also don't mind drilling a hole in the sideplates if needed to make it work. Also, does anyone know what the width is for a sissy bar for my bike, measured between mounting plates for a rigid mount, or measured between the tubing where it slides into the sideplates? I've read different things.. some sportster years will fit.. someone used one off an '05 softail... I really appreciate any info you guys can give. I want to make it safe for the wife and kids to ride around with me!
p.s. I know harley still has the chrome sissy bar and chrome detachable sideplates but my bike is all black and I really don't like that style of the one they still carry.
Had the same situation with my '01 FXDX-T. (Didn't want chrome, couldn't find black, bought wrong one, etc).
Finding them black in decent shape is tough. You might be better off looking for the parts separately. You could also entertain buying chrome and powder coating them wrinkle or Harley engine black.
Rigid Side plates that will work will fit '96-'05 Dynas. Should not require any drilling, just bolt on under your fender struts.
Backrest upright bar should be the same narrow sissy bar that will fit '82-'03 XL Sportsters, '82-'00 FXR, and '91-'01 Dyna (I believe except Low-Rider, but I might be wrong). in '02 the Dyna got a wider rear fender.
If you want to go detachable, you will have to buy docking hardware for the DX. I messed around with putting a detachable sissy bar on my DX-T. I was able to get it to work but was never happy with it and ended up going rigid. There is a '96-'01 detachable in black on eBay right now, but I wouldn't call it cheap.
