Default FXDLS HP/TQ Upgrades

I am considering a number of performance upgrades and I want to get some opinions....

I commute to work in the city on my fxdls and I am only able to get out on the open roads on the weekends. That said, I am looking to do a cam upgrade so I can get more torque on the lower end. I am already ruling out Harley’s 117 kit because from what I have read, that engine runs properly at higher consistent rpms, on the open road.

If I am planning on getting cam work done, I am open to going all out with a kit and an oil pump/plate.

What are your recommendations? S&S? Feuling?

I am also curious to us to hear from people who are running Barnett clutches and the difference they see vs stock.

I'm running s&s 625 cams in my fxdls. Stock displacement but I've got some head work and high compression pistons in mine. Netted 117 hp/119 torque at the wheel. Well performing cam on the mid to upper range. If you aren't planning on doing other engine work I'd say probably a grind more like a 583 or 585. But my personal outlook.

The stock fxdls doesn't have enough compression for the 585 to do well in it. The 583 "might" work ok, but without increased compression, I probably would look for something with an earlier intake close, or consider bumping the compression (to 9.8 or 10:1) with a thinner head gasket and possibly a small cut on the heads.

I would disagree with your statement on the 117. I installed mine at 4K, now have 20k and feel it runs just fine at lower speeds/rpms. I had mine tuned and have more power at lower rpm than high and I couldn’t be happier.
