Default Dyna or Softail Buying Advice

Hey guys I have always loved the look of the Dynas but my first bike was a small 400cc bike so I was a little nervous about jumping on 610 lb bike from my 350 lb first bike. So I bought a Suzuki Marauder because I was more confident about sitting on a 500lb bike and I love riding it around but I am wanting a Harlye upgrade this summer to a 1985 Evo FXR to 2000 Dynas and Softails. I am just would like some advice on buying a used one? What should I look for and what kinda of price range should I expect to pay? How should I go about looking at these bikes to make sure they are exactly what I want? i want to be sure I get a good bike for a good deal and do not get a bad Harley or over pay for one.

Thanks in advance,
Peace

Only way to guarantee not getting a "bad" Harley, is to get a bike that you created it's history with. And even then, that certainly no guarantee.
I'm impressed that you took the time to do it right, by moving up in size/power/weight incrementally. This gives you the best chance of not getting in over your head. Notice I said "best chance."
An EVO FXR is going to be a different animal as they are appreciating now, NOT depreciating. So, the sooner, the better. The 2000 Dyna/Softie pricing has just about hit bottom. They might start an upward swing within the next few years, depending upon just "what" the MOCO puts out between now and then.

How many miles experience do you have on your first bike?

Second bike?

Thank you for the help and advice on this. I am looking for used because those are more in my price range than new ones. I am not sure on me first 400cc single cylinder GN but my Marauder I got about 5000 miles in the last 8 months. That is why am starting to do my research on Dynas and Softails to see how much they are and some mid to late 80s evos. I might not even end up buying one of those this year and just get another 5,000 miles on this one and look next year so I am just getting some advice on the bikes that I really want and fell in love with the look style and noise years ago before I started riding.
