Inconsistent throttle performance 2002 FXDWG
Hey guys. So I have an odd problem. Just got an 02 Dyna and all seems to be well however, not being used to the engine (my first Harley) I accepted the fact that it rides easy but not too fast. That is, until last night. I did a couple of fast rolls of the throttle and all of a sudden the thing ripped like a wild beast. Sure it put a smile on my face but I was able to do it once more by jerking the throttle. Couldn’t do it again. It rides and the powerband feels steady but I know there’s more power to the bike. I hold it wide open and like, wtf. It just gets faster. Slowly... what the hell coild it be? Am I to look at the throttle cables( not opening body all the way) or accelerator pump?!?! Bike runs well, I mean it sputters occasionally. It nothing wild or out of norm. Wtf?!
I'm guessing the bike might have a set of aftermarket cams installed. Many time these cams preform best within a certain rpm range and you "accidentally" found that range,, only to continue with WOT expecting good results in a different range. It doesn't work that way.
Good luck with your first Harley.

Sounds logical but once I hit that “sweet spot” and continued rolling the throttle it responded the same: fast. Once I released the throttle back it went back to its tame self. I leaning towards the cables but who knows. I don’t actually know how it feels when accelerator pump is busted.... is there a way to adjust accelerator pump? Could not find anywhere. I got a CV carb with enrichener on a 88 engine.
I would check the intake manifold seals, then go through throttle cable adjustment and carb adjustment.

Awesome. Love the last video: CV carburetors and youuuuuuuuu!!!! Lol. I’ll start with cables since it’s easier and pop the air cleaner off to see if throttl body opens all the way. If it does I’m afraid I have to give it to a shop. Unfortunately only so many things I can do on a sidewalk (living in NYC). Does anyone know if there is an adjustment screw to the acceleration pump on this carb? I couldn’t find one. Looks fixed to me. The only screws I see are mixture and idle. ? Thx
IIRC, no there isn't, it's linkage driven and does just a single squirt. It doesn't continue to add fuel.
