I know this is too late ....But should of kept the Shovel Head... It's gonna be hard to replace,
I agree with you, however if this guy wants to run a lot of miles he will be much better suited on a new bike. I am not saying the shovels are notcapable, but when I log a lot of miles I like my sportster better. I think the older bikes were geared to run 55-60(4 speed), where the new will run 80+mph(5-6 Speed).

I was debating the same options for the last year or so. I like the Vics, especially the Vegas Jackpot, but I've been a HD fan for most of my life. I ended up buying a Street Bob..... Not because of the HD tag alone, but for several reasons. Biggol summed up most of my thoughts and reasons with his post:

StBob and 8Ball have a similar price point so you can't spend much time deliberating there..
When it comes to current HD vs Vic bikes, I'd go with HD for a few reasons:
It's been there longer and still meets consumer expectations.
Accessories are much more available.
Dealership network is stronger and more prevalent than Vic's in the case you need emergency waranty work.
You're not dissapointed when you get your StBob and realize a Harley is still a Harley.
Plus, the resale value, owner loyalty, and owner events all favor the HD.

If I was rich, I'd have both.

I have a buddy that rode his Victory for about 8 months before he traded it in for a GSX-R.

Yes, he is a moron and lost quite a bit of money on the deal but he never really liked the way the Victory handled. The fat tire on the back made it very hard to lean into corners and it was pretty heavy. He wanted to get a Streetbob but couldn't buy the same bike as someone else at work.

Did I mention that he was a moron?

I like the Victorys motor they eat twin cams for breakfast lunch and dinner.I can't stand the way most of them look.I rode a Hammer it looked OK but the handling was way too high effort for me.What it boils down to is if you're main concern is comfort and style get the Harley if you want to haul *** go with the Victory. Also as somebody else already pointed out the dealer network isn't so hot but I got a decent Vic dealer about 5 mi away so for me that's not an issue.

Only you can decide what bike is best for you. In addition to the above comments, I will add:

I am disappointed onsome of theparts onVictory bikes. Lots of plastic chrome such as the cheese wedge, turn signals, switch housing(although they would be black on the 8-ball) and others. Unacceptable on a bike in this price range.

Little aftermarket support.

Primary gear whine.

The air intake. Yes, you can get a PMRT or other setup but it's still some plastic box you can't see under the front of the tank. One of the fun parts is the intake, you put on an air cleaner that you like and make it look nice. You can barely see the air intake on a Victory which is a good thing, just some plastic coffin looking thing. There are dozens of intake setups for the Harley that offer different looks.

That hideous, tacked on oil cooler. They need to redesign that monstrosity.

Yes, the Victory motor is bigger. A whole 4 cubic inches. The '96 HD TC puts out 92 ft lbs of torque stock. PLENTY in my book.

The authentic Harley sound,an authentic Harley bike.

Not having to say "It's a Victory. A VICTORY. They're made by Polaris...never mind."

As far as the Victory being faster, yes I suppose it is. And a VTX is faster than a Victory. So is a V-Rod. So is a Suzuki M109. If you want faster, there are plenty ofbikes faster.

I don't like the lines of the victory and the tail light looks awfull...Just my opinion...plus whats the after market look like for victory are you going to find the parts you'll want later? something else to ponder while you make your choice...Later
