I have read all the replies and saying thanks. Getting all my ducks lined up to do it this wkend on my 07 SB. Per ws6 forumals recommendations I'm going to cut the rear shifter shaft and pull the thing out from the front without removing primary cover(s). I also looked at the service manual for any pics to help. It sure looks like there are components along the shaft inside the housing that will become loose. Am I correct? Figure 7-57 on Pg 7-36 be exact. I apologize for the trepidation, just don't want to get into any unforseen headaches if I can avoid them.

Thats not the one, your looking at the rear shaft lever that goes into the transmission. You want to cut the one that goes through the primary and attach's to your shift lever that you shift with your foot.
I think cutting the shaft is a bad idea. If it creates a problem or you want to switch back, your screwed, and you have to buy a new shaft. I say either use a kit that has a cap for the shaft and leave it in or buy the Harley kit and pull the primary like it tells you to. Sometimes you can cut corners and get away with it but when it doesn't work it can get reeeeeeeal expensive! Kuryakyn makes a kit for the 07 that leaves the shaft in. You can order it from www.discountcycleparts.com for $300 plus shipping. This is $100 off the retail price.
the shaft goes through a guided hole, there is nothing surounding the shaft beside the two primary housing halves. there is a small round gasket between the two case halves around the shaft to seal it from water/dirt etc. so if you remove the shaft without removing the primary housing you don't need to worry about parts falling anywhere etc.
