Default Fork Seal install

man, i am struggling to get my fork seal down deep enough to put the retaining ring on...i'm pretty sure the metal spring was facing down when i took them apart, but now i am second guessing myself. I'm using a 2" pvc pipe that i tapered slight on the end as a slide hammer. but as much as i beat it, i cant get it down quite enough. I think im going to get a longer pvc pipe so i can tap it with a hammer. its a 2010 WG and i am replacing the sliders with black one Gloss Black Front End Kit-45800010

you should NOT need a hammer. did you clean the inside of the tube thoroughly and most importantly grease the outside of the seal first? i grease it well and can almost just push it in by hand. then take the pvc and hammer it in. you may not have it tapered far enough up.

I've never done it myself, but as I'm planning on swapping the right slider on my FXR for dual disks I've been watching videos. I haven't seen any where they didn't hit the PVC with a mallet - so you may need more force on it to get it seated.

But I'm sure the more knowledgeable/experienced will chime in soon.

So much for my suggestion. Sorry if I was incorrect.

i use a tube of old red grease by lucas. you can get it at any auto parts store. hell i have had fork tubes that i pulled apart 6 or 7 times messing with things and as long as i lubed it every time i never encountered any damage. i just did a set about 2k miles ago when i put in my aexo suspension. had it apart 3 times for a stupid mistake and they are perfect. that lucas grease works wonders for assembly lube with rubber components lol

I use the electrical tape method, plus throw the seals into the freezer overnight, makes them just a hair smaller....

you are using the old washer on top of the seal when hitting it with the pvc right? not just the pvc on the rubber seal?
