Default Using Shocks the Upside Down

I recently purchased some Villain2Hero bags for my 2009 FXDL.

The bracket that would mount on the top shock bolt has some metal that comes down making it impossible to place on my current suspension due to the fact that the upper area is wider in diameter and doesn't allow the bracket to slide all the way onto the thread. (I could get longer threading and space it out more and more, but I'm trying to keep the bags from making me any wider).

Someone mentioned that since the bottom of the suspension isn't as large in diameter the bracket would clear and I'd be able to mount it if I flipped my suspension.

Is this something that people do? I'm afraid of handling issues on top of other things, but would consider it if it is something that is normally considered to be a reasonable thing in these types of situations.

Thanks,

Default Flipped Shock

Harley flips the r/h shock on the newer touring bikes to accommodate the attach points for the back rest, sissy bar, tour pack, etc.
