Default 06 Dyna closed loop EFI question

Talked to a tech at a local dealer about the new closed loop EFI on the 06 Dyna's yesterday . I was hoping to get an answer about a stage one download after a pipe change & breather upgrade . No answer , just the same old story . I read in several magazines that the new closed loop system in supposed to compensate for any changes due to the addition of O2 sensors in the exhaust pipes , but the dealer swears that I still need the $200.00 download . Does anyone know if this is true? Help...

I know they compensate for SEII slip ons OK but I think you
need a remap if you do the air cleaner too.

Whatever I do I always ask the service manager what it will do to the
warranty, especially anything with the motor.

I spoke to a service manager and he told me that the closed loop system would compensate for changes in the pipes and air cleaner because of the O2 sensors also, and that the download was not absolutely necessary. His advice was to do the changes and ride the bike and see how it performed. If it seemed to be running to lean and you get alot of backfiring then do the download.

Then I have had others (not Harley Techs) tell me different. I am going to try the service managers advice and install the mufflers and air cleaner and see how it runs before doing the download.

If my BMW's were anything to go by, running the Bosch Motronic system (a damn good efi set-up - could teach the Japs a thing or 2 about smooth-running injection systems but I digress...) the 02 sniffer will only have a limited latitude to compensate for pipe/induction changes. One really good upgrade, crude but effective though, is to uprate the fuel pressure regulator.

In this instance I'd reckon on the non-Harley specialist to be nearer the mark in terms of what acutally works and what doesn't. As soon as my DX is out of warranty I'll be fitting a Power Commander. My 2005 bike is running the chip/download for stage 1 and backfires/bangs on the overrun like a b*stard - bike has the usual opened up air cleaner & a V&H Pro Pipe.

From what I've learned, there are several possible upgrades. Most of the time, you can get away with just adding slip-ons and doing nothing else. Sometimes it will result in a lean condition with a lot of popping and backfiring. If that happens, then you need to modify the EFI. If you change the pipes and the air cleaner, you will definetly need to remap the EFI. You can either buy an aftermarket item like a Power Commander, DFO or a SERT, or you can purchase a cartridge from Harley that is specially made for Stage I upgrades on the new Dynas. Here is a link to the cartridge you will need..

If all you plan on doing to the motor is pipes and an AC, the cartridge is probably a pretty good deal. If you plan to do more, then don't waste money on the cartridge cause you'll eventually need to get rid of it. If you're planning a lot of engine mods, I would go ahead and buy a SERT from HD or a maybe a DFO or PCIII. I think SERTS are about $350, DFO is about $150. SERT is probably best because there are a lot of maps available for it.

The closed loop system on the new Dynas is supposedly made by Delphi and works just like the Delphi automotive system. The 02 sensors have a very limited range and only work at cruise speed.

You need to have the dealer install the HD downloads.

Hey I would try to fine another dealer, the new close loop system on the 06 Dyna models only, the softtail and other models that have EFI as an option for 06, have the current fuel injection system which require the older remapping program system. Supposely the New system you shouldn't need to reprogram the EFI computer. "The new system (close loop) dual sensor O2 ..monitors the contents of the exhaust stream and makes corrections to the fuel mixture"
And I also read it in Vtwin magazine tech review..so hopefully they've improven the system for better

Hey thanks for the input , I'm going to go ahead and have the Stage 1 download as the tech suggested . This should work out OK once I get the pipes on , waiting for the Vance&Hines to become available in Jan.

I picked up some brand new SE slip-ons off Ebay for $50. They are the 49 state legal ones. I put them on my '06 DWG yesterday, but I haven't had a chance to ride it yet (raining like crazy here). I haven't done anything to the EFI and I'm running the stock AC. I started it up and it sounded good and idled great, but I'm interested in seeing if it pops or runs lean. I'm planning on going with the VH in January, and getting a stage I map and SE AC, but I hoping I can sneak by until then. Soon as I can get on the road, I post about the results.
