I have owned a 93 FXR and I now have an 11 FXDC.

You have to dial in the suspension for what you want to do.

You can go from hard core solo only to really plush two up riding.

But front and rear balance is important. Add the range of use you will employ.

I have taken this route; it works pretty good. Ricor Rears, Ricor Intiminators +15w fork oil, Superbrace, Corbin two up seat that plants my ***. Like a small bucket. Holds me stable so I can wheel the bike. I have Woods Brothers cams and Knight lifters and a Fuelmoto exhaust. This baby rips, has 100 ft lbs torque from about 2800 to 5300. Peaks at 80 hp.

I can preload the rears to take a passenger or unload them for me solo. Takes less than one minute, I know the marks and the Ricors are built for easy adjustment.

But there are a lot of ways to go. I have a Bonneville and I am looking at cartridges for the front forks which are also available for Harley's. I can't imagine my FDXC with cartridges. Intiminators tame the front fork enough.

In the end its the range of loads that you dial in for. I am setting my hog up to accommodate me and my rider and I like to ride solo once in a while. A Harley let's you take a wider range for what the bike is capable of because it will never be a Bonneville or a Ducati, but vice versa.

If could afford them no question would have been Ohlins or Legends, but for my Budget , Progressive Drop In Stock Length Fronts and 444's in 12.5 " Rears have worked nicely for me ..
