I have done this with my 03 WG. I just updated my 03 WG transformation, there are pics in it showing I was on borrowed time with my cam shoes. It's an easy job if you are familiar with wrenching. I wrench on cars and my WG is first bike to wrench on. So much easier, less cylinders, not laying on my back to work on.

my suggestion if you do this, when you open up and even if you just do the tensioner upgrade/replacement, change out inner cam bearings. It requires a special tool, there are folks on here that will rent it out, or if you have harley buddies, might get lucky and you can have a beer pizza party, and use his tools

I upgraded to newer model SE cam plate, oil pump, hydro tensioner setup, new timing chain, Andrew's 24R(?) Cams, lifters and adjustable push rods. The new push rods prevented me from having to remove rocker boxes. I sources all parts from various online vendors (boardtracker and Goldstar mainly) for best prices.

as for carb tuning, I did a rebuild and rejetting using CV Performance parts.

I justified all the upgrades by doing all myself, saving money for labor, and saying labor cost savings justified my upgrades

good luck, sorry for long post.

Don't call it and upgrade. It still leaves your link chain on the rear that needs monitoring. Some I have seen actually wear faster once the shoes is pushed with hydraulic rather the spring.
My 04 still has original at 50k. I personally think heat and age may make them crack. I would inspection rear bearings and just replace with OEM shoes. Then you will be good for another 14 years. Inspection at 20K and go from there but I bet you will never need to service them again.

Just my opinion and not telling you what to do..just what I plan on doing. I just am never around in the winter anymore to get it done..
