From: Depends on who wants to know.........and why.
First try cleaning up the shifter shaft area( if you have not already). Spray some solvent like WD-40 in the area where the shifter shaft rests in the sleeve and work the shifter, maybe even use some compressed air to blow any gunk out. Then get some lubricant in there, work the shifter some more.
If your shift linkage has dropped, and will not return to the next gear. Then yes i would pull the top cover and check out the spring. Mine broke while on the road, but i got it home. It is a costly fix for a 15-20$ spring. I did it myself cheaper than a dealer doing the job. But the tools are what cost you the most, you will need a race puller to pull the race off the main trans shaft. Pretty much disassemble the primary side, disconnect the starter, and remove the exhaust to get at the transmission bolts. And the spring has to be oriented properly on the shifter pawl other wise you will be taking apart again. While you are in there you might as well check out the bearing as well on the primary inner cover and check out the race, that has to be pulled from the shaft (see picture). i went by the shop manual. All went well, you do not have to pull the rear pulley to remove the transmission, but be careful when pullin it out, not to damage the main bearing. Hope this helps you out.... It was alot of work, and the bike was down about a month, mostly from trying to hunt down the tools and parts.
The bike still shifts. But I have to push the shifter back up between gears. Like I said, it just won't spring back up. You push down into a gear, and the shift just sits there. I need to pull up with my foot, then push down to click into the lower gear. It flops around. Not sure how else to describe it
My concern is the broken pawl spring (if it is a broken spring) damaging the gears.Or worse, jamming up the gears while I am riding.
Is this common? If so, Harley should make this a recall
