Default Head temps

First ride today after changing the rear tire, Rear shocks, and oil. Temps in the 60. Watching my power vision and I was seeing Head Temps in the 300-350 range. That def doesn't seem normal for me. I swear they where 280 ish last year. Though on what could cause this or should i not worry about it.

What to add temps went up when moving but would drop when sitting at a light which I though was strange.

My ‘17 STreet Bob, stage one w/ PV (Fuel Moto map) does the same thing. Yesterday head temps were 325* riding at a steady 70mph. Head temps dropped down to 295 at a red light. Less explosions happening at idle and the jugs are cooler from your last run at 70.. Of course, they will start to creep back up the longer you sit stationary. You can do a test through quick tune, add some fuel % and see if the temps drop a bit at speed.

Highway mine are 260ish. Never above 300 unless it's bumper to bumper traffic. Have a Jagg slimline cooler with a thermostat that kicks in 20 degrees cooler than the one that comes with it.

Just to make sure, you are talking about head temp and not engine temp correct? If so, I may have to dive into this further. A quick search and I found this. Check out Jaime’s post #4.

OP, after a bit of googling....Looks like the PV head temp is calculated number not a true temp reading. The PV engine temp is an actual temperature reading from the head. If that’s the case both of our bikes would be in the normal range. That being said, from what I’ve found it would appear that even though the PV head temps seem really high, we are in the normal (calculated) range as well. If this info is true, not sure why PV would have it labeled as “head temp” if it is not a true reading.. Guess they have their reasons.

I suppose everything I found could also be total BS

Cylinder Head Temperature based on my Power Vision. Oil temp should be lower but my bike has never seen 320+ CHT ever, even without the oil cooler. My CHT is 240-250 range in fall/winter and if it's really cold in the 220-230 range as I ride at least once or twice a week even when it's super cold out unless there's a chance of ice(not that we've had much of a winter in the last half dozen years). Even when it's 100 degrees and humid here mine never gets above 300 in normal city riding unless it's a bumper to bumper situation and highway riding it's 20-30 degrees under 300. I'd get one of those fancy dipsticks with a temp gauge but I don't think my oils being cooked to the point of ineffectiveness just from the CHT on my Power Vision.

20w50 in winter and 20w60 late spring/summer. Jagg Slimline oil cooler with Wards thermostat. Flo oil filter(didn't do anything to my temps really but it was a gift).

Your tune is probably a bit lean.

On the PV reading of the Engine Temp, you want to keep that between 200 and 230, going over 230 and performance begins to drop, going over 250 and accelerated engine wear begins.

While a too lean tune is not good and should be remedied, richening up a tune is going to have very little effect on engine temperatures....maybe as much as 10*, but that is just a small dent in how hot these run from the factory.

PV Engine Temps of 250-300 are "normal", BUT, they are not right/good for performance or for engine longevity.

Below are two very informative reports worth reading on Harley's and engine temps.

Sorry been a busy weekend. Yes i was talking Head Temp. I am guessing I switched it at the end of the year from Engine temp.

Today ride in I only really for the ENG temp to around 240/250 in city traffic and the head temp was around 320 ish. I am guessing she does run hot since I don't have any aftermarket cooling on it yet. I just turned eng temp back on and that today. What I do find strange is this morning before starting the bike the Head Temp was reading 122F even though I never road the bike etc. anyone seeing this also?
