You’re right to a degree. However, i think If your of a shorter stature like myself then the Dyna is much more comfortable to ride, More nimble, and feels lighter which make for more comfy riding. Maybe different for you at 6 ft though.
Having owned both, I would rather spend all day on a Dyna than a softail, just a personal choice.

The Softail suspension I feel is more set for long, straight rides. However, now that I've upgraded my rear shocks and threw on a quality seat on my dyna, I feel I could journey all day if time allowed it. The dyna will outhandle the pre 2018 softails. There is something about flicking these things around the roundabouts that is strangely satisfying.

I'm 6'3" and ride a Dyna with mid control and it's very comfortable to me.
I had an '04 Heritage few years ago and it was by far the worst motorcycle I've ever owned, It handled like a truck, Dragged footboards in the curves and was terribly uncomfortable.

I’m an old man with average riding skills. I ride 2014 Dyna Wide Glide. Love the 103 engine and transmission. Has good power and handles better than Softtails. I ride with Softtail riders and they can’t stay with me in the back road twisties and mountains even though they are better riders than me.
Wide Glides aren’t for everyone. Wide forks, rake, forward controls, skinny front tire. Low ground clearance I’m constantly scraping foot pegs
.
But for you get a Dyna Low Rider or Street Bob. Or the Fat Bob you like.
Better yet get one of these if you can find one. My favorite Dyna of all time.

It’s all about geometry...and full swingarm suspension w/twin (pick you size) shocks will always provide a better ride then a short throw shock mounted on a reduced travel swingarm.

Dyna’s are the sport Harley’s...if you want that get a dyna, if you want that old school stylings you seem to be pinning for, stick to your softail and learn how to ride it....

For me, my '13 Anniversary Edtion Super Glide is the exact mix of what I was looking for in a bike,

super reliable
fast enough for me
Light & nimble enough, compared to Softail & Baggers
ABS
EFi
6 sp gearbox
Tubeless wheels
The ability to throw a sissy bar, bags & a screen on & go touring in about 5minutes flat
Mid controls with highway pegs

Just love it....

sounds like the fat bob is perfect for you man, a dyna with the larger front wheel and all or you could try to find a switch back
I had a dyna with floorboards like the switch back and hostly I didn't like it, too far forward for me, I just ended up hanging my heals off the back anyway

I like mid controls with highway pegs, flat track bars on risers. that is how I have been comfortable for the last 13 yrs.
on the highway I ride mostly with my right ft on the passenger peg and left ft on the mid controls, I don't know why its just comfy for me

any dyna (except wideglide) would be good
big enough to be stable and comfortable at highway speeds, small enough to be easy to maneuver, its the perfect bike

I concur with this. The Fat Bob is, to me, the best platform. It works great to quickly covert to a bagger if need be, or you can strip it down to a hot rod. And all is possible with quick-detach parts. The main thing is that combination of a fatter frame and thicker rubber, make this bike extremely easy to ride in any environment, with any set-up. For instance, I have a quick detach sissy bar with a welded luggage rack that goes on and off in minutes. I also can add quick detach bags on if I need to go for longer. And the bike strips down very quickly to bare bones for spirited rides out in the country when I want to tear loose. It tracks very well in the corners (for a Harley) due to the similar tire size front to back, with a short(er) wheelbase. I also use a chassis stabilizer to keep the bike tight through high speed cornering. Fat Bobs have a greater lean angle, so you wouldn't have to worry about grinding floorboards anymore, like your Fatboy. And the bike is very comfortable, even in stock configuration. I had plans when I bought the bike to upgrade the seat to a Mustang, but so far, I haven't needed to.

I see others recommending Lowrider S, and while those are amazing Dynas, they're kind of one trick ponies in my opinion. THey're great for ripping around, but I'm not sure they'd be the right platform for loading it down for a long trip. I'm not saying it's not possible, I'm just saying there are better options for that purpose, and the Fat Bob is definitely one of them. Good luck, OP, in your decision.

Because you mentioned concerns about forward controls, I also wanted to add something. My FXDF obviously has forwards. I'm actually shorter than you, at 5'11", but I have longer legs. Every rider is different, but in my experience, my legs are not stretched straight out, they're bent about 120-130 degrees, so it's not really an issue. I would guess that at 6'1", your riding position would be comparable, if not even more bent. Of course, the pegs can be adjusted closer or further with inexpensive options, or as Hell Hound mentioned, you could switch to mid controls to put your feet under you.

I ride mine all over the country. Just as easy to turn into a make-shift bagger as the Fat Bob. I wouldn't trade my S for any M8.
