Default Hard starting... after quick run

Hey gang,

So, had an interesting occurence today.... the lowdown: have had the bike for about 3 weeks (Brand new '07 Street Bob) and have racked up about 600 miles. Just got a quick detach windshield and installed it, went for a quick ride (5 mins) and brought it back home to adjust... After only 5 mins more, I go to start it up again and she just doesn't fire... crank, crank, crank, but no fire... wait another 5 secs, try again... crank, crank, crank... vroom.. fires... thought that was kinda weird.... any ideas? My initial thought was that since it was a short trip, and there may have been fuel still in the injectors, that when I started it, and waited for the light to go out, it over-filled and flooded it?

seemingly if they run for short periods of time the fuel injection mapping has to rethink itself - and thus the prolonged restart you describe. My humble opinion / WAG.

I had the same problem; harder to start after being off for short periods like when filling up gas etc. SERT cured the problem. It runs cooler now and I think the prob was related to vapor lock.

I just bought a 2001 Dyna Superglide and have had the same problem and it really is starting to **** me off. I call the service department and they said that this is typical and adding after market pipes can make it worse. I need to know if there is any solutions for it or even just to make it better! I heard someone mention SERT but I am not sure what that means please advise!!

You may have it a little backwards -- I don't think it's hard to restart after a short trip; I think it's hard to starta short timeafter having beenshut down.

Short run or long run mine's a litte reluctant to start after refiueling. But it starts the instant I push the button if I stop someplace long enough for a cup of coffee.

Just my observation.

Same observation here - let her sit, she fires right up. Stop/start, especially hot, she is hard to fire up.

My SERT has pretty well cured it. It is richer now when hot - starts right up.

I thought my bike was the only one. Good to hear someone else is occasionally having the same problem.

My 07 WG starts up from cold on the first rotation. Takes a few turns after it's warmed up, stopped, then started fairly soon thereafter. I understand the stock Delphi EFI system has an auto-enrichener that "engages" everytime the bike starts, even if it doesn't need it. Then stays rich for quite a few seconds, if not a couple minutes, before returning to normal. So, it appears the engine could be over-rich during a hot start and stumbling. Here in Arizona new bikes require emmision testing after 5 years, then every year there after. Some Delphis have now been on the street for 5 years here in Arizona and I am hearing that they are having troubles passing our emmision tests because the test process requires you to drive the bike into the test area and shut it off. Then they hook up the sniffer and then ask you to start 'er up again. Well, the auto-enrichener turns on and the readings are high. If we didn't have to shut it off then start it right back up again there would't be a problem.

Will be very interesting to see how this issue developes when more and more Delphis go to emmision testing.

Anyone out there had their Delphi EFI bike go through an emmision test yet?

I've had this happen (hard start after quick stop/start) with every bike I've had - old Yamaha, new Yamaha, Sportster, Buell, Suzuki, and now my Bob. Just seems to be nature of the two-wheeled beast.
