i have an o7 harley ultra which since it was new it would ping in the mountains. 3 times it would not start and i had it towed 2x to the dealer and they disconnected and reconnected the quick couple off the tank and it ran fine for a couple of months. last year it quit several times and i dis and re connected the coupling and it ran for a little while. i took it to the dealer and they replaced the quick couple after replacing the vent valve (the vent valve was not the problem) and i had to return to the dealer the same day. But since the coupling was replaced the bike runs better and stronger, does not ping at all, and has not had a fuel problem since. The old quick coupling i could move up and down a bit like it was loose. the new one is very tight.
Yea i have a 06 Ultra and it cost me a 75 tow bill, towed it to local Harley dealership and showed me the same problem.Harley didn't charge me anything but now i feel uneasy about it happening again everytime i ride.
I used to work were they made the disconnects. I helped design and build the machines to assemble and test them .. There can be a couple issues with couplings like the ***** wearing and letting the coupling close enuff to slow or stop fuel flow. They also if decoupled a lot and not re coupling them keeping the fitting as straight as possible can shear the outer o-ring causing fuel leaks. Seems the o-rings dont like ethanol either.. Ive helped a bunch of guys out here repair the fittings o-ring wise but if its a problem with the ***** being wore to the point of decoupling the fittings somewhat to cause little or no fuel flow then thats a replacement fitting to cure the problem.
Happy riding
