If you get a quality shock, lowering it by 1" may make even a better ride, by virtue of changing from the HD pogo sticks to a real shock.

It will also make the steering a bit slower, not quite as quick, unless you lower the front also.

Here's a LINK of an overview of rear shocks.

Here's a LINK on how Rake & Trail affect steering.

I have 3 year old 444 Progressives that are still new. On the bike without rider weight they measure 12.5 center to center. Seems to be an odd 1/2 inch length.

That is a sweet looking bike! When I bought my 03 Wide Glide the previous owner had lowered the front and rear about an inch. He used lowering brackets on the rear and Progressive Suspension springs on the front. The handling of the bike was pretty crappy. When I replaced the rear shocks with the 1" shorter shocks from Harley the handling got much better. I'm sure aftermarket shocks would do well also but a lot of them required notching the rear fender on my bike and the shorter Harley shocks did not.

As usual YMMV. Good luck.

One inch shorter shock won't quite get you an inch lower riding height, but I also wouldn't go under 11.5" on shocks.

Scary advice. Take a great handling bike like a HD & get it to handle better by lowering it even more (SARCASM ALERT). The shocks may be crappy, but if the bike is slammed, then the shock will never have a chance to work. They need a little bit of travel, you need to be able to set the sag (for the rider weight), etc.

Figure out what you want to do with it. If it's just a bar cruiser then slam it, & don't even worry about handling. If you want it to handle, get some TALLER shocks, not shorter ones. You will be better served with a CRAPPY shock that has 3" of travel than the best shock in the world with 1/4" of travel (I think they call it a hardtail).

you must have missed the "SARCASM ALERT" in that post.

Also, with the right mods (good engine mount, Sputhe stabilizer, GOOD shocks, etc. you can get a Dyna to handle pretty good. It's always going to be a heavy bike, but the handling can be very significantly improved.

Hell...I did miss it. Disregard.

Though, you can never tell with what these kids these days are doing to Dynas...as you said.

Not sure I would fit in the "kid" category, but my Dyna handles very well with Progressives out back and Race-Tech fork innards.

I do have a very extensive background in motorcycle road racing...that may also have something to do with it..lol

Didn't mean anything by the "kid" comment. To me, most of you all are kids, lol. So, I'm just curious, SpyGoat, why choose a Harley after having road raced in the past? Was that done on a Harley?
