fuel filter for EFI bikes
Anybody changed their fuel filter yet? Anybody know if there is a screen where the fuel line connects to the tank like a carbed bike or isthe only filter on the fuel pump like it shows in the service manual?
dog06Bob,
There are two filters for efi units - one is a screen that's about 6" longby 1" widethat is at the bottom of the pump - used for the gas pick-up. The other is a small round paper filter in the efi assembly. Both are replaceable but I don't know the time / milage intervals.
When I changed tanks @ 4500 miles I inspected the filters and decided NOT to change them. They "looked" good to me - no sediment or the like. Since I sealed the tank (glassed over the efi access hole and mounted the gauges on the bars) this was a pretty big leap of faith sincenow to service the pump requiresa hammer, chisel and repaint.
I DID put a 5/16" clear plastic "car" paper filter on the bike for a couple of days while testing the tank to see if it trapped anything out of the(used) tank. Again - I could not see anything. Bike runs great. I did have plans to add an inline 5/16" filterwhen I find one (all I see locally are auto 3/8") but that will make 3 (three) filters. Overkill??
Maybe a filter with a built in line pressure gauge - if it's not to big... Keep in mind any filter you install is close to the HOT engine. Any failure could be very bad...
Good luck - dd
