I've been through 2 side mount plates, both mounted on the lower shock bolt, and they have both actually cracked off and flown off the bike. If you look closely at the pic, you can see the cracked area. I'm going to try it on the axle the next time I guess. Not sure why this is happening. These brackets are used on rigids and shouldnt crack? Are their any other options you guys can think of? Id like to maybe mount something that would lie off the back of the fender (like on the breakouts), to shorten that space between the fender and tire. Any ideas please.
Thanks, Jeff Broke off the shock bolt yesterday while riding!
Most failures like your seeing is from the ridged mounting at the bolt face or washer face and the unsupported area around the bolt. It flexes just enough that after millions of cycles it cracks and fails Just like a clothes hanger when you bend it over and over.
You may be able to add some large Delrin or UHNW washers between the plate and some larger washers to help absorb some of the vibration, just be sure to use blue Loctite on the bolts since you will not be able to achieve the full torque value with plastic washers, but it should be fine on a shock mount.
What is the thickness of the tag mount that failed?
From your pic, your mounted to the axle, correct? Any issues? Delrin washers are the plastic-type? So you recommend placing those on each side of the steel bracket mounts?
Yes mine is axel mounted but is aluminum and close to 3/8" think at attachment point.
I would not recommend Delrin / plastic washers on the axel because the torque requirement would never be reached without crushing / spitting out the washers.
To shock mount the bracket it would be less critical of torque just loctite so bolt does not loosen.
And yes install on each side of bracket. PM me and I can send you a few washers.

So if I stay on the shock, you recommend the delrin washers on each side? What if I go to an axle mount, do you think Id have better luck in that area? Thanks for the offer Bob, that's very cool of you, but you can just shoot me a pic of them if that's easier for you and I can get them? I've been researching all different options of where to mount this plate.
Jeff
Tried to send a PM, said you dont have enough space to accept?
Bob, if the shock bolt is a 1/2 in diameter bolt, wouldn't I need a 1/2 in I.D washer, instead of a 3/8 I.D? I'm just trying to take your advice and do this correctly.
*Again, I tried to PM you, but they tell me you have to clear some space in order to receive any more messages.

You are correct 1/2" My message box was full you can now resend.
The nice thing about making them is I can make the O.D. larger than off the self items.
