Check all the electrical connections under the seat. If you have the security system, getting that fuel pak in there is a real tight fit. They may have pulled a wire loose in there somewhere that is shorting out. You will see grounds on the rear fender side of the frame when you have the seat off.

This identical thing happened to me last week. I checked everything and found one minor issue that I'm not 100% sure was the cause but, everythings good now. But, this is the second thread in the last two days about this identical issue not counting mine. Got to be some common issue somewhere. Good luck.
That SNAP sounds to me like something arcing. The fact that it doesn't happen until you hit the start button probably means that you can eliminate any components/wiring that is hot when the start button isn't pressed. I'd be thinking starter/solenoid or wiring in that circuit.
Do you have the service manual? It's got schematics I'm pretty sure.
As bad as you don't want to I think I'd make me an appointment with the dealer or a Indy shop to find this problem.
Take yer battery out. pull the 40 amp fuse 1st and have a load tester put on the battery. Undue stress is going threw the electical system sounds like. I had the same problem and it was a connection not properly making connection..
The longer you let it go the more its gonna eat on yer battery. When you put the cables back on, clean the connections good.
Hope you find out what the problem is before you have a break down.
I think the snap you are hearing is a arc. if you have a chassis ground perhaps on the starter that is not making great connection when you try to start it will pop a large spark. I'm almost sure that somewhere a ground is not making contact. IMHO
I had something similar happen in a parking lot. Fortune shined on me because I lost the bolt for the battery cover (having no tools with me) so I was able to remove it. I tried starting it with the batter cover off, and I saw that the leads for my batter tender were turning orange and sparking (positive side of the battery) so I found a screw driver, took off the battery tender cable and it started right up. Seem that the leads on the battery tender cable were in pretty bad shape...broken and dirty...and were causing what I suspect was a short from the battery to the battery cover then ultimatly to the frame.
Did you check both the voltage and the amperage on your battery? I had a 6-month old 06 Street Bob that was starting hard and popping/ not firing correctly, and it ended up being the battery. I even had it on a trickle charger when not riding it. The battery was pulling the correct voltage but not the correct amperage. I took it to the dealer who checked it out and found out about the bad battery. They replaced it under warranty.
