I keep hearing about these 96's running hot , i wonder if most have had the race tuner download map and the requireddyno, those would be the first 2 to change , and according to the Harley Parts book , when changing mufflers and/or add the stage 1 breather kit , you would then buy the S.E. race tuner map and have the bike dyno'd , and without those done motor damage could result, that's what in the manuel and they make the motors not us , i'm going to follow the book , i don't need no motor exploding on me while i'm doing 90mph on the highway, i got some good guys at my local shop , i never see anybody complain , about the work .[:-][sm=escape.gif]
The MoCo is aware that they run hot. They have to program them like that to pass EPA inspections. Any combo of pipes, air cleaner, tune/jet will help with the extra hot temps.
If Moco went to the trouble to release a download that shuts off the rear cylinder at idle to help cool the motor, there most be an issue they deem serious.
96 isn't that great of an increase over the 88. I wonder how the other really punched-out motors (110 & 120) behave with respect to heat.
Mine didn't run hot. Even when I changed out the stock exhaust for the BSS without changing the A/C. I have since changed the A/C for a Big Sucker and added the SERT with one of the canned downloads and plugs look good. WIll get it dyno'ed once I have more miles on it. I also get very little popping on decel.
My 2006 does gives off heat even with ( thermal shut down at idle ), all's i know is my 99 lowrider TC88 which i had the big bore kit made it a 95 and it never ran hot , i definaly notice this motor generates more heat between the legs and it sometimes smells funny ( i heard that before ) I have a Black Thunder header with the shields , the stage 1 kit and S.E. race tuner but i'm waiting for my Black rocker boxes to come so my mechaniccan do it all at once ,I'm hoping when it'sall mapped and dyno'd it will run not as hot , it's all because of the emmisons , thismotor has got toBREATH to get the temp down ![sm=gobble.gif]
