Just got the bike(2011 FXDB, with 42K on the odometer, replaced the motor mounts "amazon", now when i hit a bump it sounds like it is bottoming out. Also, when i hit the rear brakes the bike shudders not a brake shudder, but a seat of your pants shudder. Anyone have any ideas.
Check the gas tank bolts, front and rear, to see if that stops the bottoming out sound. Check the brake pads on the rear first, if they're okay see if the rotor needs to be replaced.
I was thinking that the motor mounts were of inferior quality. Could this be coming from a bad motor mount?
Yes, especially if it's some off brand Chinese crap from Amazon.
Look at the mount to see if any of the rubber is damaged or if the mount wasn't shimmed correctly.
Sometimes the tank bolts don't need more than a slight tightening, so use a socket or a wrench on them.
My previous bike was an 06 Superglide. When I bought it in 2017 the front motor mount was shot. I thought I’d be proactive and change both. Front went on without any problems. Rear mount was on backorder from JP, so I rode for about a month with just the new front mount. What a difference! Less overall vibes and rode well.
When the rear mount arrived, it was a PITA to install. Seemed like it didn’t line up right, no matter what I did. Finally got it installed and had the same symptoms as you. Swapped the old mount back in and never looked back. Ran fine til the day I sold it.
If the other posts’ suggestions don’t fix it, maybe you could reinstall the old mounts, one at a time, to see if you can isolate the issue.
I recommend the front and rear motor mounts from Drag Specialties, really firm, hard rubber. Got 4 years and no deterioration. I'm also using DS rear motor mounts in my Wife's 04 Sportster.
