Hi, I'm new so please forgive if this is a worn out topic, but various dealers have given me different versions on upgrading the fuel-intake/ exhaust. I put cycleshack slip-ons on about 300 miles ago , checked my plugs todayand they look good, just like thet are suppose too in the pictures in the service manual. All OK,just like the dealer nearest me said it would be..he said next, when I put on the K&N hi-flow air filter and the required back-plate, I could ride down there, install the air-filter in the parking lot myself, and then they would do the download to my ECM; saves me money and so far this guy has been right-on. Checked in at few other Harley shops this weekend, and the comments range from 'you are ruining your engine' to 'you'll have to buy the powerecommander etc, etc, dyan-tune and spend $1000.00! I tend to believe the guys who are giving me the simpler facts...what do you all think. Thanks!
Simple solution is good for now - but down the road if/when more mods are in the plans (full exhaust, SE engine mods, or ...?), getting a HD SERT, Power Commander, or similar will allow you to remap at each stage of mods rather to continually pay for new remaps that may not quite be 'perfect' as they don't have them for every possible combination of mods and thus only get you sorta close. A good dyno tune will help dial it spot on - but no need for that right now I should think. Good Luck!
if you put a filter and pipes on your bike a power commander is good idea and you will notice a big differance from harleys maps i know cause i did it your way and a year later did a power commander and wish i did it in the beginning but it didnt hurt to wait
When I put on the Vance and Hines BSS I didn't do anything to the ECM and it ran just fine as long as I kept the stock air cleaner. I now have the Ness Big sucker and SERT.
Pipes and stock A/C, you don't need a re-map. Once you put that bigger A/C on your running a lot more air into the motor and you'll burn it up eventually without richening the mix with a remap. The inital d/l he'll give you should befine, but it's probably a canned map for that combo of stuff. Getting it dyno'ed is the best way to go in the long run, but for now simple will suit you fine IMHO.
Kind of cool for him to suggest you do it yourself in the lot to save bucks. Most creeps would have saw you coming a mile away and reached into your wallet.
You'll generally get 10 different answers at 10 different dealers about pretty much any quastion asked.
H-D Corporate really should do a better job of keeping all the dealers on the same page as far as these sort of things go.
