Dont know how differant the 04 is from the 13', but I put 32oz when I did a quick fluid change during the break in process. I pulled the derby cover off before draining it and filled ti to the exact place the factory fill was. I put 3 1/2 qts of oil when I changed the filter if that has anything to do with it.

If you put in 32 oz. and have difficulty finding neutral then you know you have too much fluid. It's quite possible the 32 ozs. is required when the primary is opened up for work and all the fluid is drained, my 02 and 05 both call for 26 ozs. for a typical fluid change.

No wonder I can't find neutral! I just replaced primary fluid last week...I may have put in too much...thanks for the tip!

One more thing...I've read some of you say (for the primary chaincase)

1. 24 oz.
2. 26 oz.
3. 32 oz.

Why does my Clymer manual for Twin Cams '99-'05 say the primary chaincase needs 1.75 QUARTS? It's almost TWICE the amount you guys are listing! Am I reading this wrong?

not sure about your year Noob but my service manual says 32, though its 2013, but tbh i have never heard of 1.75 in the primary, the oil should just reach the bottom of the clutch pack, probaly easier to do it visually than go by amounts, just my 2 cents. And yeah still waiting for you to get back to apes.

PS, just rang a mate with a 2005 88ci roadking and he uses a litre (Queens English, Australia)

Ride safe

I never liked Clymer manual's, There no where near as good as the factory manual. But then again i guess it a case of you got what you paid for type a thing.

Pour 26 oz of primary fluid in through clutch inspection cover opening.
The primary chain case fluid is acceptable when fluid is visible in the bottom of the chain case with the motorcycle is in the upright position.

section 1.11 of the service manual.

.. I always have trouble finding the primary dipstick ! --- So I just follow the H.D. manual where it says to fill the primary only up to the ring on the flywheel with the bike sitting level . That works regardless of how much I put in ! ( My manual is for a 1993 Dyna but holds true for my 2012 Dyna)

Every time I changed my primary oil on my 2006 Street Bob. I would refill it just above the slinger ring. If you take a flash light with the derby cover off you should see a shiny ring on the outside of the clutch basket when looking down into the primary opening. Your oil level should be just above the shiny part. In mine it was around 24 to 26 oz. an entire quart was too much. This method should give you the correct amount as long as you see the shiny ring and put the level just above that. Good luck. Hope this response helps you.
