coming home from a memorial ride, my bike developed a heavy vibration, with it there is a slight grumbling sound, I pulled the primary cover to check the tensioner, all good, checked the compensator bolt, tight. Do compensators give out, i understand that they are like a harmonic balancer on a car, but haven't seen the guts of one. Want to be able to finish this season!!, thank you in advance
Ive had 3 different twin cams where the compensator went out . The last one took out the whole primary . The only sign it was going bad was it kicked back through the starter a couple of times before it blew up. Id get that checked soon as possible.
I just developed this, im pretty much a stickler when it comes to maintenance, so when i noticed this, it was riding done, I usually ride 10-12000 miles every year, so thankfully I recognize these things
Yes the spring packs can die. The springs can crack. And the inner primary bearings are a failure point specifically on the 06's such as ours. When those go it will make a sound of rumbling rocks in your primary but the noise goes away when you pull the clutch in.
I see alot of compensator eliminator from different manufacturers, if the compensator works like a balancer, how do you eliminate that and keep the crankshaft balanced?
Harmonic Balancer is an automotive term often used to describe what is really a harmonic dampener. The compensator performs the same function, using ramps and springs instead of rubber to smooth out the power pulses. Personally, I'd be leery of eliminating it given the design of the engine.
