Default Replacing stator - is this normal?

I purchased my 06 FXDI used a little over a year ago and have always had electrical/startup issues since I purchased it. Every night I would end up needing to put it on a tender or fear it not starting sometime the next day. The dealership looked it over 6 or 7 times during the first month, then the "used warranty" expired and nothing came about it.

During my last real ride, there was a bunch of metallic noise in my primary followed by a bad electrical smell and my check engine and battery lights came on. Error code p0562. Right before I managed to get it home my entire dash, headlights etc all went out.
Running the multimeter around the bike I received no resistance from the stator output. Battery dropped to 8v.

I finally managed to get all the tools together to replace the stator just to find this mess! Where the hell did all these extra screws come from?? Is this a dealership **** up or the previous owner? If nobody put these screws in the flywheel, where did they come from? I see no other possible way of them getting in there...

That was one of the '06 model year design flaws on these bikes. the bolts would work loose and trash the charging system. I changed mine to a stator and regulator from an '08 model along with a screamin eagle compensator and rotor to eliminate that kind of problem. If you go back together with original style parts the bolts can be tack welded in place to prevent this kind of failure also.

So the 8 screws in the flywheel actually have a place in the primary? Or are you talking about the 4 that hold the stator in place?

Those are the screws that attach the rotor to the compensator. They had a tendancy to come loose and wreck the charging system. You can do a search on this forum for '06 Dyna charging system problems and find several pages of info on the problems and the fixes for them, HD changed the design in '07 and later year bikes,
