if you have not tested the starter, do so before throwing money at it ... you might find the starter ok ... if the starter was still mounted you could jump it to see if it would turn the motor over ... to jump it use a jump wire from the small white connector on the solenoid to the positive battery cable
The bike did crank up occasionally,so I decided it was time to sort it ,it was going downhill quickly ,and it would have engaged every so often ,I am hopefully going to find a second hand one for now or a starter clutch repair kit, thank you for your replies
Thank you to the 2 people that actually helped ,to the other 7 that just said basically the same thing ....why when one person correcting me or advising me that you needed to know the year of the bike would have sufficed ?
To be fair, you got answers after you gave more info. I'm glad you figured it out. I did a new clutch in my starter fairly recently and was pleased with result, it was not real difficult excepting that I have a softail and the oil tank was a total PIA.
This is a great forum and has a lot of knowledge in it and some great members. I would advise to read the "stickies" in each forum before posting, they'll definitely help you get better info. Search function works well too.
From your original post it could have been anything from a dead battery to no gas in the tank, or anything in between.
I'm still not clear what you mean by "crank up." From all the other posts, I think I can deduce that your starter motor spins freely and doesn't turn the ring gear. If you want help, and no sass, describe your problem in detail, like "When I press the starter button the starter motor makes a whirring sound but it doesn't turn the engine."
If you have a starter/alternator repair shop nearby they may be able to over haul the starter for you. The bendix, solenoid may not be kicking in and engaging the starter clutch. If the starter clutch was going out they usually make a growling sound and will intermittently catch the ring gear in the primary. Good luck.
