Hello. I'm getting some play in the headset on my 2001 FXDWG. I notice the movement now and then, fell it through the bars, hear a ping, and sometimes I can see the center nut on the headset move... which is really the fork moving... Has anyone else delt with this problem? Is it just something that needs to be tightened up or do I need new headset barings and cups?
Haven't had this problem, nor have I heard anyone talking about it - doesn't mean it doesn't happen though.
Personally, I would replace the bearings and race. You can get the bearings from most automotive stores for cheaper than the dealer, but you will most likely have to get the race from them. Its a cheap process and not a whole lot of work... then you can tighten everything up to spec and be fairly confident you are good to go
you need to jack it up and check for play - then you need to adjust the fall away as described in the manual. if the front end does not seem right after performing these steps, then you might need to replace bearings and races, but it might just be loose.
I'm not sure a loose front end sounds like a "ping" - maybe you have a different problem?
Okay ... more of a clunk than a ping... I'll get into it this weekend and see if it's loose. I've never been in this bike... looks like the canter cap unscrews on the top then there should be a bolt under it?
On closer inspection it seems the upper triangel of the triple tree is loose and not the headset... good news. So this mean I can just tighten the nut it seems, now I have to find a big enough socket set and torque it down.
