Default Ipb?

I’m getting a loud whining sound when my 2006 Street Bob is in neutral. It doesn’t matter is the clutch lever is in or out. As soon as I put it in gear the noise goes away. I’ve seen other posts that seem to say it’s the inner primary bearing.

It just started tonight after I had adjusted my belt tension. Is it possible that I had to belt too tight and smoked the bearing? I only rode it for around 30 minutes. I adjusted the belt again, (looser). To 3/8” at 10lbs.

Thanks

I don't think too tight of a belt would take it out that quick. I run my belt at 1/4"@10 lbs without issue.. I would suspect the primary chain being too tight to take out the IPB.. Time to take it apart and check... For the primary I set at 1/2."

What kind of sound would it make if the cam tensioner went bad? From what l understand that was a big problem with that model.

no - the cam chain tensioner issue in the early twin cam dynas did not effect the 2006 or newer dynas. The 2006 dynas have an upgraded cam chain tensioner design that removed the spring loaded shoes and used hydraulic tensioners. The Softail and touring bikes didn’t get them until 2007.

Thanks. I’m basically clueless to all of this and just recently began try to work on it myself. Any thoughts on what the problem could be. It only makes the noise when it is in neutral, whether or not the clutch is pulled in is irrelevant.

If the primary chain tension is off and l adjust it will it possibly fix the problem, or will it just let me know what did the damage?

2006 Dyna models are known for eating inner primary bearings.

It was caused by a misalignment between the inner primary cover and the transmission. There were a lot of threads about this issue back then.

Do a google search for 2006 inner primary bearing.

I’ve been looking for whatever l can find about it on here. It seems like the transmission cover has to be replaced as well to fix the problem?
Thanks

Also will the Inner Primary Bearing still make the noise when the bike is in neutral and the clutch is pulled in? Or is thar a sign of something else?

A bad inner primary bearing will make noise with the transmission in neutral, clutch lever in or out.

Once you put the transmission into gear the noise will stop (because the mainshaft has stopped spinning).

The real cure to the premature ipb wear on the `06 Dynas was a new transmission case and inner primary cover.
