Default Forwards to mids

I’m looking at some Dynas to replace my Road King. I would prefer mid controls with some highway pegs out front but almost all of the Dynas I see have forward controls.
I know going to mids on a bike with factory forwards is a lot more than just replacing the controls hardware due to the primary.
What about bikes that are factory mids bikes but have been converted to forwards? Is it just a matter of swapping the controls since the primary already has the shifter shaft in the mids location? I mean just pop that little cap off and hook up the hardware right? Or am I over simplifying it?

It depends on how they converted to forwards, so people leave the level behind the primary for the mids, some people cut the shaft and remove it and use plugs. If there is a cap on the end of the shaft you should be good.

As stated above Bubba, check to see if the shifter shaft is still in place or removed. If the shaft is there with a cap on the end it's quite simple to convert back to mid controls. If the shaft has been removed (either by cutting or removing the primary chaincase) and a button type plug inserted in the outer primary, you will have to remove the inner primary entirely along with the clutch and compensator etc. to reinstall the shifter shaft thru the backside of the inner primary. There is no way around this. Always use new gaskets upon reassembly also. On a final note, if someone has converted a factory mid control bike like a Streetbob or Lowrider to forward controls and they chose to replace the inner and outer primary case to one without the shifter shaft hole ( like a Wideglide for example) you will need to find a complete primary case designed for mid controls. You cannot convert a Wideglide style primary case for mids. Hope this helps you.

I converted my 97 WG from forwards to mids. I already had an inner primary with the shaft hole and just bought the inspection cover with the shifter shaft hole - I didn't need a new outer primary.

Fairly straight forward job. Not sure what year(s) you're looking at, but call an indy and Harley to see if they have takeoffs. I got mine from an indy.

That, and some people go so far as changing out the outer primary, and in extreme cases the inner primary also.

Basically it's going to vary bike to bike.

I was referring to the more modern era Dynas (perhaps 2006 & newer?) which have a tower cast into each half of the primary case and no inspection cover on the outer case. The two towers meet in the middle and are sealed by a tower gasket which has an adhesive backing to adhere to the inner primary case. When both halves are assembled a leak proof tunnel or thru hole is created for the shifter shaft to pass thru. That is why you can cut the shaft behind the primary to remove the shaft all together and not develop any leaks of primary oil. The button type plug inserted into the outer primary is for cosmetic purposes only as the hole passes straight thru.
