Default Is this right?🤦🏻‍♂️

I recently installed cams, big bore and new heads that had some work done to them. I was chasing some noise with the pushrods/lifters and it seems to have quieted down some after some adjustments, but something still sounds excessively noisy.

I’m just eyeballing around looking for leaks and wondering: have the rocker covers/heads always had this gap/channel with the gasket running across it?! Did I reverse the lower rocker boxes?!

The gaskets can’t be wrong because the little channel matched the oil flow indent thingy....maybe I’m just being paranoid but I seriously can’t remember ever seeing that huge gap with the gasket just floating across previously. I AM now running Screamin Eagle heads, if that matters.

I may be wrong but I don’t think you can put the lower rocker boxes on wrong. There’s only holes for pushrods on one side. Also aren’t the covers made in such a way that they will only physically fit between the rocker box and the frame one way?

Id say you’ve probably got nothing to worry about, but the front head pipe looks very close to the frame. Could be the angle of the picture?

You may have reversed the rocker box lowers

I don’t think they can be reversed. It looks like they only go on one way. See the small holes for the pushrods and the big holes for the valve springs?

If the OP is hunting excessive top end noise it might be worth pulling the covers and looking at the rocker supports. Just double check all your bolts for tightness. Of course you did say you added new cams, I don’t know what they are but early twin cams can only take .510 with stock springs and that’s if you didn’t deck your heads or add a thinner head gasket. Excessive is subjective term though, maybe it’s just something you’ll have to live with...

Thanks again fellas. If it’s “just noise” I don’t care, I can live with it.

But doing it myself for the first time, every little noise makes me think something is rubbing or grinding or on the verge of shearing off or breaking 😬

Just to add, many performance cams will introduce more top end noise over stock. I have Woods 999-6’s which are about as radical as they get, and they make my top end sound like a can of nails, even with a high end rocker support setup. High lift and aggressive ramps along with heavier springs make valves slam closed pretty hard. Just a possible option for the perceived noise.

Yeah for sure. I’ve got the S&S 570 Gear cams and heavier springs. Just gonna ride through the noise and deal 👍🏻

Some adjustable push rods will slap the covers.
The cure is drilling them out a bit.
