Default 01 wide glide

What up guys. Lookin for opinions/advice on my 01 wide glide. It’s a bike I’ve had my eye on since my grandpa got it. Finally the day has come where it was passed down to me. It’s a bitter sweet deal, very happy to get it, but sad to see my grandpa reach the age of not being able to ride anymore. Anyways, there’s the sentimental value of the bike.

I’m lookin to make it my own. I’ll be honest I don’t know a whole lot so I’ve been scrolling on here for a few weeks trying to get ideas and I thought you could do whatever with harleys and make it your own, but I’ve kind of been seeing that’s not so much the case. Or maybe im misinterpreting. So before I make a mockery of the bike and myself and waste a bunch of money, wanted your guys ideas.

im thinking about putting on fat spoke wheels

thinking about changing the front fender to a klockwerks 19”. Either the wrapper or level

new leather bags cause he just had them held on with a shoelace so they are beat haha. Any suggestions?

new seat. Saddleman?

getting rid of the windshield and possibly crash bar

and then bars. And I need help here. I want to go with the Carlini gangster apes. Was pretty convinced on going with the 14” but I see lots of people saying they wish they went taller. I don’t really have anyone to ride with so getting a feel on another bike iis hard. I saw a thread that said Carlinis ran a little taller or felt taller than what they were and that lots of people like the feel of the 14s. I can’t find that thread anymore but found a more recent one saying that they fixed that and run true now. So again I’m on the fence of 14/16. I try to hold my hands up pretending but it’s hard to get a feel. I don’t want my arms super stretched, I still want to be comfortable. Next would be 1.25 or 1.5 thickness? I like the bigger look but it seems I only see that on bikes with bigger front ends.

sorry for the long thread, but I do appreciate the help! Here are the only pics I have with a hand on the stock bars for reference and just some pics of the bike!

My opinion is to ride the hell out of it for six months to a year before you start changing things. I know tons of guys who changed things out upon getting their new to them bike, only to find out a year later that they're changing everything out again now that they know what they REALLY want. YMMV of course. Good luck with what ever you do with it.

Nice bike, by the way. Enjoy.

Of course you can make it your own so not sure what you're talking about there!) Or maybe im misinterpreting. (Yeah, no need to be hasty, that's a great bike, let's have no mocking it up here or wasting money!)

im thinking about putting on fat spoke wheels (Those spokes look good to me, put that money in cams!)

thinking about changing the front fender to a klockwerks 19”. Either the wrapper or level (I'm partial to the Wrapper type, check out my front fender!)

...

new seat. Saddleman? (Seat smeat, name smame, check them all out and choose what fits you best)

getting rid of the windshield and possibly crash bar (Well you mean just taking them off and setting them aside, no need to actually getting rid of them, shields come in handy, plus it was dear old Grand Dad's!)

and then bars....

sorry for the long thread, but I do appreciate the help! Here are the only pics I have with a hand on the stock bars for reference and just some pics of the bike!

(You have come to the right place )

Welcome to the forums and congrats on the new bike! Dynas are great rides! The above advice is spot on.

However, I'm curious how many miles are on it and if your grandpa had any engine work done? The early twin cams had the best cranks, but had cam chain tensioner issues. I would certainly look into it.

As for comfort and aesthetics, only you can decide what is best for you.

Good luck and post updates.

🍻🍻👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 what a great response that had to take some time thank you for that!

I do agree those spokes look good, I guess I’m just partial to the fatter style. It’s due for tires so I’m just thinkin if I wanted to change wheels, now would be perfect time

I like your bike that is clean and I do like that front fender. That may be the one

of course nothing getting taken off is being thrown away or given away. It will all be saved!!

id have to get the book and do the math but I believe it’s 20-25k on it. I definitely want to get it looked at cause I think it’s been a while since it’s been serviced. The odo has been replaced but I think that’s the only “big thing” no motor work I don’t believe

I'm probably gonna catch some flack for saying this but I would keep it just the way it is. It is a fine looking bike just as is but more importantly it was a gift. Pay honor to your grandpa and keep it the way he set it up. Ride the bike and enjoy it with a huge smile on your face while you think of him. He won't always be here and that bike will be his memory for you to keep. Wait until you buy a bike with your own money before you modify it to suit yourself. I do believe in time this bike will come to mean so much more to you if you just keep it as is .Again though it needs to be said that it is a great looking bike! Ride it safely and ride it often! And always remember your grandpa while you smile...this is one old man's opinion of course.

i will always smile and think of him while riding the bike!! But I see where you are coming from. This is a subconscious thought. I dont want to change it too much. I love the color of the bike but the little bit I’ve rode it I can tell I’d at least like some higher bars

Like said above somewhere... Ride it..
Play with the angle of your bars, find the true comfort point
You got more than enough chrome..
I tend to agree with the front end but at least yours is a WG and not narrow!
I'm keeping my tubes(buying mid glide soon) as I have them stiff which is what I like. Rebuild them!
So sink money there as it will be cheaper than the whole front end.
OH and a comfortable seat is a must..

Nice find

OH check the tensioners before riding it too much unless you know it has been worked..

thanks! I definitely need to get it out and ride it more and see what feel I like. I know it needs tires and I don’t know how often my grandpa serviced it so it will definitely be goin in and getting looked at before really riding it
