I'm almost embarrassed to ask this, but HOW to you re-oil the filter? I don't have any way to mist oil and clearly, it's easy to get to much by pouring it over the filter and wiping it down. What's the recommended method?
You can buy the K&N recharge kit at most any auto parts store, it will contain a spray bottle of filter cleaner and a spray bottle of filter oil.
Spray on the cleaner, let it soak about 10 minutes then rinse with water. Allow the filter to dry and spray lightly with the oil.
My recollection is that K&N filters do not come pre-oiled...
The oil in the photo looks a lot like ATF. I've never seen a puddle of K&N oil, but I would expect it to be thicker and darker than that.
No - it comes pre-oiled. It is actually sealed in a plastic bag as it is kind of messy. The oil is definitely from the filter - I bought the oil that you use to re-oil from K&N and it was exactly the same as what I found when I took the filter off. Also, I don't have any fluids that color in the bike
For future reference always clean your filter in the opposite direction of airflow. Don't soak them either. Spray on your cleaner, then using a soft stream of water clean from the inside of the filter to flush contaminants out, not drive them further into the mesh.

Hmm... I bought a set of K&N pod filters for a different bike a few years back and they were bone dry. (Found the installation instructions: "The filter media is a washable, reusable cotton fabric that must be serviced with K&N air filter oil before use...")
But, yeah, if they came pre-oiled then it wouldn't surprise me if they were over oiled.
