I bought a 2016 FXDWG with just over 2K on the odometer. Perfect condition, but uncertain maintenance history so I changed the engine oil, primary case oil, and air filter so far. I replaced the HD OEM with a K&N air filter - looks identical, probably just slightly different filter element. Anyway I have been riding and it seems fine. I pulled the air filter b/c I forgot to put the blue thread lock on the screws holding it in place. I was surprised to find a red, oily substance around the edge of the filter and probably about 30-50 ml leaked out onto the engine when i removed the filter. Pics attached....any ideas? BTW, I did not add any oil to the K&N (it sort of looks like that type of oil to me).
Filter showing the color of the fluid I already wiped it away but it was all around the perimeter, of course more at the bottom
No worries, its the filter oil. Some filters like the K&N use oil to trap particles and hold them to the element. Whoever cleaned the air filter and re-oiled it just put too much filter oil on the element. Wipe it down and get the excess oil off of it and go for a ride.
FYI, you should clean and re-oil those filters every so often, not sure what the official interval is but I clean my filter and re-oil it at every oil change. When applying the oil just spray enough on there to coat the element, don't soak it.

it was a new filter of out the box that I installed - and I did not add any additional oil. Do you think it came with too much oil?
Cleaning and re-oiling my K&N filters on all three bikes is part of my spring ritual.
I'm almost embarrassed to ask this, but HOW to you re-oil the filter? I don't have any way to mist oil and clearly, it's easy to get to much by pouring it over the filter and wiping it down. What's the recommended method?
I have a spray bottle of K&N oil. And I soak it good when I clean and re oil. Worst case is a bit gets sucked into the motor.
Also do you still have the EGR dropping into your intake?? You may have a bit of crankcase blowby along with some excess K&N oil. That pic you posted sure looks like K&N oil. I am just not familiar with your particular motor oil.
