Hello, everyone! Looking to pick up this 97 fxdl. I have some pics and a quick video for you guys, I value the communities opinion when I make a purchasing decision as you guys usually have really good insight and give it straight if you think a bike is a dog or not. 2 Owner bike, 27k miles, stock engine, minor cosmetic damage on rear fender, will need new tires, brake pads and maybe lines. All electronics work and engine runs/sounds good. Owner posted for $5400 but we agreed on $4750 out the door for the work I will need to do to make it road safe, will cost me another $500 to transport it across a few states.
Definitely needs some work, tires look like they been sitting flat with those sidewall cracks, fender on rear needs repair that can be seen. Id be looking at the fluids and any service records they might have. Id also look inside the gas tank for the liner peeling and separating off. Looks like the front cylinder base gasket might be failing too. If it was me Id pass for that price!
Seems like a lot of work to be done for the price. I bet you could find a really nice, road worthy price for right around $5000. I'd pass on that one unless you can get him down to about $3000 or so.
Front caliper has rust on bolts and brake line looks weathered.
The engine looks weathered.
Bad chrome in several places. It looks like it was sitting outside for a long time.
Front cylinder base looks like it is leaking oil.
Throttle and idle cables not sitting correctly...wonder why?.
A lot of space between throttle grip and switch box.
Seat is torn
Is that fuel tank damage at right rear near the seat in video?.
Fender damage
What is going on with fuel valve?
Overall the bike looks like it was exposed to a lot of weather.
You guys gotta show my the secret place where you are finding these $5k evos at that are in good condition Im not sure such a thing exists here in CA. The market is absolutely flooded with $8-12k dynas sub 1999. I know, CA, its a joke, but thats what I have to deal with. Maybe Im way off here but I figured $4k would be a steal and I put $1500 worth of work into it and Ive got myself a decent set up? Im not exactly seeing evos popping up a dime a dozen anymore, especially ones that havent been too tampered with.

If you are a do it yourself type of person then $1,500 would get job done with parts only but not everybody can the handle labor themselves or address a base gasket leak.
Labor gets expensive fast.
Some can not address labor due to skill, time, space or tools but if you are buying an older bike then you really need to have that ability or get ready to pay.
The bottom $ for a rolling Big Twin bike with some curb appeal and a clean title seems to be $5,000.
If you increase funds to about $8,000 the market opens up.
