Well, my Road King keeps getting heavier, so I'm considering an '09 or newer Dyna with windshield, bags, etc.
I've had the RK for 10 years and I love it, but I don't do the big mile rides like I was hoping to do, so I'm not using it to its full potential. I had an '09 Low Rider for 1 year and it was great, and I remember 09 was the first year for the 96 motor, which is fine by me. And I like the 200 lbs weight savings vs the King.
Any big issues with 09+ Dyna's I should be aware of? I realize they are similar, but is any Dyna model better suited for a touring set-up?
I'd love to hear from those of you who've gone down this road.
Just to post here , I have a 08 fat Bob and mine already has a set of Viking hard bags and looking to get either just a windshield or a fairing since I will be riding roughly 100 miles a day going back and forth to work. Once the weather changes here in Wisconsin will update you on what I find. The one reason why I went with a fatbob over any other Dyna was simple . I wanted twin disc front brakes and the twin headlights . Plus I can't sit on a floor board equipped bike without cramping up so forward controls are a most have versus having a crash bar mounted with highway pegs .
Took my Mustang Regal Duke off my 2007 FXDB and put on my Sundowner seat when we go 2 up. Back to the Mustang for solo riding. Before i got the HD Sundowner seat (we're both 71) we went 2 up on the Regal Duke, from outside of Chicago, IL to New Berlin, WI 5 times. From Chicago to the Tail of the Dragon, from Chicago to Dallas, TX round trip 3 times. 105,000 miles on it now. So, who really need an over weight bagger to Tour on? NOT ME!!! I'm thinking neither do you. Only 1 major improvement is needed; 14" bagger AIR SHOCKS (NOT the short Street Glide shocks.
Ive done 500 mile days on mine, the bags usually stay on but if I plan on a long day I throw on the floor boards. Full windshield/lowers, wind vest, or no windshield depending on weather, how far Im going, or if I plan on being on the freeway for an extended period of time.
Good point on the shocks above, the stock ones arent very good and probably my next upgrade.
Sometimes I wonder if I should have gotten a Switchback but Im a carb lover. Happy hunting!
2008 Fat Bob. HD 103 upgrade with S&S e-z start cams and an RB pipe. Been through 25-30 states and a few provinces over the years. Solo, as you can see (the wife bought herself a Low Rider; same year) Ive ridden the FLHs and they all felt ponderous, even a couple of 120R powered ones. The larger front tire gives a nice ride. Added Progressive 412s on back and Race Tech springs up front all very comfortable on most roads. Suits me just fine
Just an FYI, the 96 inch was available in 07 and newer bikes. Oh and just about any Dyna can be a good tourer if you set it up right. The Switchback may be a good starter as it comes from the factory with windshield and hard bags.
