... I don't really want to take the bearing case off so I'm wondering if I can Helicoil through the hole in the case? Anybody ever do that before?
If I'm reading this correctly, you want to leave the "Trap Door" in place?
If so, just know that there will some shallow threads created by the Heli-Coil STI Tap in the ID of the "Trap Door" and you'll have to thread the insert through until you're just in the case
Thanks for all the replies, even the smart-*** ones were funny. If it's a 1/4" bolt do I need a 1/4" Helicoil? Is there an ID/OD spec that I need to be looking for?
1/4" ? ... ok so are you talking about the cover bolts or the 5/16" Trap door bolts (bearing housing) bolts?
Regardless you get them for bolt diameter/thread pitch. The length of the insert is selected by multiples of diameter ... so 1D length = same as diameter, 1.5D length is 1.5 times the dia, and so on.
It's the bearing housing bolt. Looking at the picture I posted it might not have been clear what hole I was talking about so here it is circled and I'll restate the question. Can I Helicoil a stripped bolt hole in the transmission case through the bearing housing bolt hole?
The tap for the helicoil is probably bigger than the hole in the bearing housing. Is it going into a blind hole? You'll need a "bottoming" tap. Why not take the time to do the job right? "If you don't have time to do it right, how are you going to find time to do it over?"
