K&N motorcycle oil filters are made in China by Hi-Flo. Hi-Flo makes complete crap - this is the only brand of filter I know of which has collapsed and cut off all oil flow to the engine. I'd use Fram before Hi-Flo or K&N. And I'd use a 20,000 mile old filter before I'd use a new Fram.

Supertech (walmart) filters are made in the US on the Champion line - the same line where they make Mobil-1, Bosch, and the new Harley hi-performance filters for the 88" and 96" motors. If you're willing to buy Harley, then Supertech is a sister. Claiming that Supertech filters are chinese junk, and so you buy K&N is completely backwards.

Pure One filters are far and away the best for your bike.

Here are some interesting facts I learned about filters a few years back on a tour of Fleetguard's plant in Tennessee. They make some filrters for many of the name brands including a few numbers for Napa. They told us the biggest difference in their filters (branded Fleetguard) and the identical part branded John Deere were the intervals that quality control checks were performed.

I have also been involved in classes where we cut the filters open to see the actual difference in the filters construction. There are definately differences when you look inside. Fram in particular scares the heck out of me with their cardboard end caps and glued together ends on the media. Most all of the higher quaity/priced filters use metal end caps that cup the media which helps to minimize the chance of the filter coming apart. They also glue the media together as well as crimp a metal strip over the ends to positivly join the pleats together. The more expensive brands also will use a coil spring for the by-pass as well as rubber gaskets to seal the filter cartridge to the housing. The cheaper filters usea stamped steel spring and no gaskets which can allow them to bypass unnecisarily.

In regads to the Champion filters, we used to sell them where I work until we had an issue with them. We had a customer that lost an engine because their air filter had a week spot that allowed the vacuum from the engine to pull the media loose from the rubber end plate. This dusted the engine and wiped out the rings causing a major loss of compression. They would not stand behind their product and we ended up buying that customer a new engine. That brings up another thing to keep in mind, the more expensive filters are usually backed by a company that will stand behind their product. What will Wal-Mart do if their filter fails and you need a new engine? Odds are good you will never have a problem, but I am willing to spend more for the peace of mind.

i've had a few made in china girls on my bikes over the years and i have no problem with that
Wow! They're even outsourcing our women to other countries now! [8D]

But on topic (sort of), where do you find out for sure who makes HD-branded items such as oil filters, spark plugs, etc.?

The study isn't flawed. The filters he disected were for a V-strom iirc. The point is, he took many different filters, all for the same bike, and he posted his findings. He did the same thing a couple years ago for the ST1300. Same results. Purolator Pure One, hands down the best filter.

That study is flawed, concerning the Amsoil filter.
They show the small SMF 109,not thefilters used for Harley engines.

Whatcan't be seen in the photosis the materials used for the filters.
Amsoil uses three materials for the filter process. (Synthetic, Cellulose and Glass.)
Best overallprotection, a "total package".

"A filter is only as good as its weakest link."

Thanks Mark for Tuning in, I feel the same way after looking at the filter studies. I was a Fram guy before seeing the numbers now I feel that the Pure One filter is the way to go but I am just use the SuperTech filter which looks to be a decent filter for the money. thanks again for you insight.

I'm sure you made a pile of it molding plastic dog **** out there in Ohio.
Well, that could very well be, since Ohio (Akron specifically) was the location of the very first American toy company.

From what I understand, Fram makes HD filters.

Just because you never made it past second grade, don't slam people from Ohio. You get what you pay for. If your engine wears out really fast, due to a substandard filter. At least you can put the money you saved toward the cost of a total rebuild or a new engine. Champion may make the filter but the build it to Wal-Marts low standards, to reach the price point. Just about every manufactuerer has different quality level based on price.

I wonder how much money we can save if we filter our oil with used Cat Litter. Just joking !
