Hey all, I’m new to the forum, not new to Harley’s. I recently (back in November) got a killer deal on a low mileage 2005 FXDLI. It had V&H duals on it with the dynojet power commander V. Also a Arlen ness big sucker. Well the guy I got it from was not…. Let’s just say one for maintenance. Or even riding Harley’s for that matter. It sat in an alley in NYC under a cover for who knows how long. I get it home, change every fluid, air filter, plugs and wires, and ran great or so I thought. It runs/idles pretty well, fires right up when cold. However when I start it and go to give it a snap of the throttle, it misfires, soots, coughs but idles fine. Once it’s warm it’s like a fresh bike. Throttle response is there with no hiccup. I even changed the intake air temp sensor. I’m at a loss guys. The bikes beautiful and runs great besides the misfiring when it’s cold. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Put a few ounces of Seafoam injector cleaner in the fresh fuel, that should clean the injectors after sitting for so long. I have a 2005 FXDLI and when I start it I let it idle for about 30 sec. to a minute before snapping the throttle. Does this occur when you ride and the engine is thoroughly warmed up. Just a thought maybe the extra fuel going into a cold cylinder is causing you to misfire and emit black smoke.
Funny you say that, I just added about a half a can to it and it almost seems like it’s taking less time for the hesitation to go away. But yes it only happens when it’s cold. I wish I could post videos to the thread cause it’s pretty obvious on video. My next step this weekend is fuel filter and pick up sock and replace the shitty factory lines
Could be a bad spray pattern in one or both injectors. Warm engines can better atomize the fuel. If it is, hopefully, the Seafoam will help.
Im really saving injectors for last considering they’re the most costly part of the fuel system. Again this guy I got it from didn’t have maintenance sense… or common sense for that matter so I’m guessing it got 87 ran through its whole life. That combined with sitting has me hoping that there’s just build up in the injectors
Well… I was cleaning the intake and degreasing the manifold (with the air cleaner off) and noticed a broken stud on the Arlen ness air cleaner that attaches to the throttle body! Which resulted in a huge gap between the two. It gets better, when I took it all apart, there were no O-rings on the breather bolt and no gasket in between the intake manifold and air filter plate. Called Arlen ness and they were killer dudes, I got a whole hardware kit on the way.
