Hey guys, I'm new here looks like an awesome forum. I have a 93 dyna wide glide. love it! But i have a leak at my base gaskets. I am going to pull the jugs and reseal over the down season here in MT. my question is this: i have heard that the roller lifters are an item that can fail around 25k miles (I'm around 20k). but are there any other things i should be on the look out for or replace while I'm in the engine?
thanks!
Wyatt
Base gasket leaks are often caused by failure to allow bike to warm up before beating on it. My EVO is 27 years old never had the engine opened up for any reason.
Lot of what your asking will depend on the bikes history. If you have not been doing it check and clean Tappet screen.
Simple task.

If your bike starts to skip or idle funny, remove your timing cover and have a look. You might find this:
I recommend you change the lifters, there were issues with the early Evo lifters failing, they were upgraded in the Mid 90`s.
Avoid no name lifters. S&S, Johnson Hylift, OEM are all good.
While the cylinders are off, have your machinist true the bottom surface of the cylinder, this will go a long way toward preventing future base gasket leaks.
Thanks for the information guys! sounds like lifters are about the only thing that are causing problems with these bikes. I will update as soon as i get the job done.
I was about to start a similar tread I have my motor apart because mine was burning a **** ton of oil. This is how I got the bike .when I received the bike it was running extremely rich which I was told would wash the cylinder walls and it looks like that’s what happened. Now that it’s a part I’m also trying to figure out what all should be done now how do you know if the lifters are the ones that need to be replaced? I’m also trying to figure out how do I know what cam I have in it and what type of pistons I should buy.
If you're going to do the lifters you might as well check to make sure that somebody upgraded to the Torrington inner cam bearing.. It's a full compliment bearing. The OEM INA bearings are not and are known to fail..
