I've found if you try to avoid cats (or rabbits, foxes, badgers) you more often hit them as they try to dodge you ... better to carry on. Dogs, on the other hand, are intelligent creatures and generally stay clear.
Not pointing fingers because there is not enough info BUT if the dude had been riding after drinking then you did him and everyone else on the road a disservice. I do not care how much or little someone drinks, you do not belong behind a wheel until its outta your system and if you do drive/ride after drinking you deserve to get caught.
If this was a case of a cat as he said then a big pat on the back for helping out a down rider.
I don't think he really meant it literally. Trying to hit cats is just about as dumb as trying to avoid them. Besides if you have a cat keep it in your house and not roaming the neighborhood so they can crawl under my boat cover and crap in my boat thank you.
I believe in helping a fellow biker. This guy had been out there for at least 10 to 20 minutes, knocked unconcious, and no one was trying to help. The cat story is probably true. The neighbor lady had adopted a stray cat before they went to Japan, left the cat, which took up at the good looking female ALE agent's house 2 doors up (who came down at 11pm, in her shorty PJ's to investigate - remember the fire trucks and EMT vehicles). Also a senior state highway patrol officer lives 3 houses up from her. I live in a neighborhood of doctors, pilots, marine officers, and retirees. You'd think someone would offer help to a guy down and not stand at a window and call for the cops. (Sorry to you guys who are LOEs)
My neighbor lady, whose house this happen at, is also a good looking "CRAZY" female. Her husband is a doctor and naval commander. She calls me, from Japan, the very first morning after her husband leaves for a week, and talks for 2 hours, telling me she is going to come back because she is unahppy and wants to stay at my house, with her two kids, and I'm a married man. I say, "NOPE, ain't going to happen". I thought I had moved out of the trailer park years ago.
You know, I'd rather deal with and help a busted up biker, new to the area, than get tangled in that can of worms. Anyway, that's the rest of the story on this one.
The only problem with running over critters is the lack of traction, its easy to washout the front tire unless you're riding dead straight. had to replace my front fender after I hit a coon and he latched on to my tire. Thump, thump thump for 100 yds before he finally let go...tough little bugger!

[sm=happybounce.gif]Now that's hilliarous!!!!! Best laugh I've had today.
I think I gave the wrong impression since I did not give enough detail. Helping someone who is in need because they went down is something we should all be willing to do, help such as calling for medics if needed, tending to their physical needs. I disagree with getting in the way of the medics or officer from checking him out becauseyou thought there was beer on his breath. But then I have zero tolerance for drinking and driving after losing people close to me from drunk drivers.
Exactly, helping out anyone is commendable, but running interference B/T officials andanyone injured or not becuase you smelled alcohol is not.Drinking and driving / riding is wrong period. There are several threads on this board right now regarding people dealing with the aftermath of drunk drivers. The cat story may or may not be true, but what you do know is that you smelled alcohol. You should have said something at the time, or at least be willing to address it with this rider now that it's over.
