Cleaning my bike yesterday, I discovered that my silencer has split underneath. Has this happened to anyone else? Any thoughts on how/why this happened? The bike has done 39,000 miles and I fitted this stock silencer at 20,000 miles when my Remus silencer failed.
Based on what I have seen/read, most exhaust splits are due to a poor design leading to a stress point (a couple HD touring bike rear pipe designs come to mind), weak/bad metal, and/or stress fatigue from a poor installation/fit.....
I have no insight I can share about that particular split. I'm not a welder and/or experienced metal worker.... but someone who is will surely share their insight...
To me that almost looks like it was cut with a grinder with a cutoff wheel.
very unusual to have a split/ crack be that uniform and stop, yet with such a large gap. Looks like it even has some swarf/ burr on the top side from being cut.

Vandalism? Hard to believe but not impossible. Unless it was someone who mistakenly thought there might be a CAT with precious metals inside just there, who got disturbed when I someone walked past. That's believable,
Speed bump or high curb? It could have happened when the bike was being wheeled at the dealers with a flat rear tire. That was my initial thought; but isn't the exhaust too far clear of the ground; wouldn't the frame hit first?

I had a set of Rush exhaust that cracked on me where the 2 headers connected on a 15 Road Glide. Looked nothing like that. Mine was very irregular. Had it welded back up and no more issues.

Obliviously a manufacturer defect. Some of those aftermarket system carry a lifetime warranty. Know one that is a vendor on here that does. Contact the manufacturer that made it.
