Default 2005 dyna troubles

Here is the issue. Bike runs for about 15 minutes and shuts down. Go to start and it doesn't. Maybe hours later or next day it does but falls back into 15 min timeout. Changed plugs, new battery, new fuel filter and nothing - turns over but doesn't start. Yesterday, I found a questionable battery ground wire so I replaced it, still no start. Checking voltage on new battery and it is down to 6 volts. Put another battery in, turns over but no start. Then I start hearing a whining noise from starter and it isn't turn engine over.

I am thinking
Maybe voltage regulator fried new battery?
Maybe voltage regulator causing no run?
Need need starter

I need help and advice on what to do.

Last sentence of your above post means your starter clutch is out.

What if you put a battery charger on high, does it start or do more? Jump pack? Did you charge the new battery?

I'd put it on charger over night, and try tommorrow.

If you have a good battery, volt reg doesn't matter. You can run for quite a while on a carbed bike off battery.

Could be starter clutch. For me they kick back first, especially on low voltage. But could be. But I am probably going to make sure there is good voltage first.

+1 charge the new battery for the no start issue. Running for 15 minutes then shuts down, check out the crank position sensor. It reads the notches, Hall effect, and initiates the firing of the spark plugs through the ECM, ignition and coil. The crank position sensor is on the left front of the engine outboard of the oil filter.

Once you got good battery, check for spark. Leave one plug in, or use test plug on wire. There was talk about whether it needs to see a compression stroke to spark. It may vary by year and fi vs carb.

Cranks sensor isn't hall effect, it's variable reluctance. The magnet could be getting weak tho.

Probably not.
Nope,

As stated the loose connection like killed the starter clutch. You can replace the starter or simply the clutch.

2005 had both carbed and EFI. What model is yours and what mileage?

In the post you quoted he mentions fuel filter, so probably fuel injected.

OP maybe added an inline fuel filter to a carburetor equipped bike, seeing as he knew that there was debris in the gas tank.

Did you check for codes yet?
If it's shutting down you might want to see if the reason it shuts down is being reported.
