Painting Parts
I'm doing a black on blonde motif with my FXD. Already replaced the primary, trans and cam covers with wrinkle black covers provided by another forum member. Also added new bars that I painted wrinkle black myself and they came out okay looking.
What I want to know is, can I sucessfully sand down and paint any of the polished/chrome bits on the bike in wrinkle black? What type of prep should I do as far as grit# and use of a primer and so on. I could buy alot of takeoffs or new Nitetrain stuff to make my project happen, but I figure why do that if I can work with what I have?
Examples of what I want to paint are the rear struts, horn cover and the belt guards even though the bottom one is plastic. I'm even considering a run at the shocks over the winter time.
Any ideas from you paint pros out there?
I use epoxy primer (black) because it is far superiorto direct to metal 2k primer and 2k does not come in black. That way if it does chip (which it will - sorry) the chips are not as noticable. You also have a much longer paint window to apply the top coat without scuffing using epoxy primer.
Never sprayed wrinkle paint - except for rattle can, so not sure about that.
Always do a test panel...
Not sure if this helps. I did all the paint on my '04, and some of it was gloss black.
