My Switchback starter was turning a little slow so I decided to disassemble it and clean all connections. I knew that item 12 in the attachment, the ball bearing, existed but did not see it. I looked down inside to see if it was there but wasnt sure. Banged on it and it appears it is missing. I thought I was being careful, but it appears I have lost it. I have searched and do not see one in a rebuild kit. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can acquire a replacement?
Thank you!!! Actually you were both right, plus something new, to me. I watched YouTube videos before I started and that ball came out the top.
This morning early, I went to the starter repair business and bought a bearing. It was a big $1. Gave the guy $5 because he spent a little time locating it. I also found a kit of multiple sizes of bearings on EBay for 10 bucks. This one is about 1/4 inch, 6 or 7 mm.
Anyway, it turns out the bearing was still in place. On this starter, it will not come out the “top”. You have to remove the clutch to get it out. I know, strange. There is a keeper that holds it in place.
A quick test shows the starter is working, so I will tighten things up and reinstall in when I get a chance. Thanks guys!
