Default Odometer mileage increase

2004 Dyna Super Glide
Last weekend I pulled the fuel pump out of the tank to replace the fuel filter. When I pulled the fuel pump out, I had just reached the 11,000-mile mark. The following weekend I started the bike to go for a little ride and the mileage had jumped to 18,096 miles. This was an increase of 7,000 miles. Had anyone ever heard of this happening and what can be done to fix it? FYI - 3 years ago I upgraded to the Combination Speedometer & Tachometer.

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Did you remove the negative wire from the battery before doing the maintenance?

But to just answer your question about an increase like that, no, and never seen a post on here that can happen either way.

There is another post going on similar maintenance that a USER no longer has headlights.

No - I did not remove the negativity posting while installing the fuel filter. I did remove the negative terminal afterwords to see if it would reset to previous milage but it did not.

I will check out the link you provided. Thank you!

When you upgraded to the new speedo/tach, how did the milage get set?

It was set up through the data link connector. That all went well and matched the original 9500 miles. I have had no issues with this up until now.

The reason why I ask is that I wanted to know where the mileage was stored.. Early bike it was only in the speedo and on later bikes it's contained in both the ECM (possibly ICM on carbed) and the speedo. Later HDs changing speedos was pretty much automatic. The 04 are in the crossover section as a data connection was established between the speedo and ECM/ICM and I didn't know whether the ECM/ICM communicated mileage. With what you say, I suspect they don't. In that case mileage in the speedo is stored in what is called non volatile ram. I suspect that it has become corrupted. Problem is likely in the speedometer.

Don't know how to fix it.. It may have been caused by a power glitch when the microprocessor was righting the speedo value into NVram.. One would hope that software/hardware was robust enough to protect from this issue..

2004 should be ECM stores The mileage. That was the change over year.. If when you installed a new speedo the mileage showed up if did come from ECM.

I would doubt that very much. The mileage matched the 9,500 when the new speedometer was installed. I very rarely use the bike so to reach 17,000 would be out the question and even then, how would it get to the current 18,096?

Surprisedly, Google say and I only quote ..

'With a few bucks and basic car computer knowledge (which can be acquired by watching YouTube videos), you can easily roll the vehicle odometer back or forward.'

But that's a Federal crime.

That said, all service manuals say discount negative at battery for safety reasons. Guess that could be implied to protect electronics.

The ECM, BCM if applicable, TSS or TSSM, Speedometer and voltage regulator are all on even if key is off.

Probably had something to do with the patch to update that tac/speedometer

Really ought to document it. Just in case anything pops up. In VA, with their state inspection, if it went the other way, DMV would catch it and flag title.

That is really a strange one for sure
