Default Dyna Oil Dipstick Help needed for Old guy.

Ok, 71 years old (52 years riding bikes) and I am asking this? I must have dementia.

My 2009 FXD has been in storage several months due to me cracking a Vertebra in my back in half. Tired of waiting to see what the Veterans doctors might do, so I am ready to ride. (This will change my back - not sure for the good or bad, but I am sure things will change).

Anyway, I lost the little note paper that told me what the "Full" oil reading is for a Dyna placed straight upright (Not on the Jiffy Stand).

You see with a sidecar, the Kick Stand is a bit useless.

Anyway....was hoping one of you fine Dyna owners would go out to your bike. Check that the oil is full (by using the Jiffy Stand), then put your bike in the upright (level) position and check again. Take a picture, draw a picture, or otherwise explain what you see. Presently I read just below the top most "cross x" on the dipstick. (On your dipstick is imprinted a series of what looks like x's. My reading is about halfway down on the second from the top - but again the bike is straight vertical)

I am sure hoping someone can do this pretty soon as I am not getting younger and the weather is 72 here in AZ today. Hey thanks in advance.

Rex

First "X" below the "full hot" line. About half way in the "X" on jiffy stand hot. On bike lift with bike upright, it was just a hair over/on the Full line. If your in the middle of the second "X" down when hot, you should be fine.

Remember this is when the oil is hot from a ride.

Hope this helps.
Tom

The mark if your dip stick says on the stand is calibrated so it's not to high on full mark when hot.

Once it's hot, as long as you don't fill it over the full upright, your good.

That's what I would do after a oil change. That way , it won't appear too low before next oil change.

Does yours not look like this?

Rex.......number one is Thank You for your service. Number two is that is one sweet ride. Number three is my back and neck are the result of multiple fusions and disc replacements by one incredible neurosurgeon at Mount Sinai in Manhattan 28 years ago after a multiple fractured neck.
Can't help with your dipstick but I can encourage you to get better and ride that beautiful bike.
I have you by a few years and never give up my friend

It appears that there should be a class taught at local colleges to teach people to read a dipstick...

How can this be so complicated?

Open the owners manual, and it will all be there.

Jackie Paper. Thanks for the images. I did not know there was a dipstick with jiffy stand or upright marks.

There so many varieties, it's staggering. Personal, the stand nonsense just made it worst. Especially if the bike is lowered.

Like Dan says in his typical good mood, check the owners manual. But just make sure bike is not lowered or other suspension modifications and your stick matches the manual.

The one in my Softail is Harley's analog temperature stick. Has a circle line at bottom and another circle about a inch up. It's just a round unmarked one.

And if you don't have a owners manual, Harley will loan you an online one at harley.com.

Not sure if instructions of first posters owners manual applies to a sidecar. Is that a option from the factory or does a dealer add that on? Only factory side car I have seen was a FL full size cruiser.

Most owners manual for Dana and Softail say to not put a side car on them. Least I read that somewhere do to safety reasons.

Thank you all so far for your replies. The info really helps. I had it all written/drawn once, but it must have gone out with the paperwork when I donated my Kawasaki 650 offroad rig to a Veterans group that gives sidecars to those in need.

I may be overfull? I am pretty sure (Like Tom H says) that it will be higher with a vertical bike than on Jiffy Stand. Can anyone confirm the "Cold" readings? This is where I am....

I went Coast to Coast 3 times in that 650 with the big old dog pictured (Maggie). ...never hit a 4 lane highway except once in Texas, and a mile or so in California.

Maggie passed, I donated the rig....my new Girl Alligator Rides with me now!

. Thanks for the encouragement Wagondog. I always get a kick out of the "Hack" folks talking about reverse gear for their rigs. Although that could be nice at times.....My wife has always maintained that Reverse gear in a sidecar rig is not needed. As Coal Miners used to take Canaries down into the mine to detect Carbon Monoxide, therefore knowing when it was time to "quit and give it up", so goes not having Reverse gear in a sidecar. When I get too old and decerped to wrestle this rig from a problem or parking spot, it will be time to give it up and quit.

Well thanks. As a retired Engineer and College Professor, I would agree about the idea of reading. Yep, but not dipsticks, just plain old reading. You see if you actually read my post, and review the Harley Manual, you would see that little (as in nothing) indicates how to decipher the effect of a sidecar, on the oil Level.

Yep, reading is a powerful skill.

We have much in common just not sidecars. You rode well with your canine friends (true best friends), my therapy Golden was just to big for the saddlebags but Harley pulled his own wagon through the halls of NY Naval Hospital for 12 years until he passed. Thanks for sharing your photos Brother.
