Default RE: Front End Clunk.

I became aware of the clunk in my '06 Dynas' front end about two weeks ago and told the service people at my local authorized dealer and had them check it out when I took it in for the 15,000 mi. service. The factory sent a hardened washer with some instructions for torque values to be applied when tightening the bearing adjustment nut. The big question is ,how do you get a torque wrench on a nut that is shaped more or less like a sprocket and you can not find any factorymade special tool for it. The bearing adjuster looks like it is made to be adjusted by the screwdriver and hammer method and I looked in my technical manual to find a factory tool that would enable someone to torque to a specific value but I can't find one and the mechanic at my dealer can't either. The service people at my dealership called the technical support at the company but did not get a reply ,my wife called the customer service at the company and was put on hold for forty minutes before she gave up.I'm frustrated.

The star nut is not torqued, it is adjusted to get the proper fall-away. There is a typo in the manual on page 2-67 on "installation", should read "tighten adjusting nut until there is no noticable shake or freeplay between the bearings and races"

If the fall-away is takes over 4" the bearings are too tight, loosen the star nut, if the fall-away is less than 2" then the star nut is too loose. Once the fall-away is set then you torque the "Stem Nut" to 45-55 ft lbs. No where is there listed a torque for the star nut, that is done by hand as stated above.

(Remember when the star nutadjustment is made the bike is on a jack and level so the front wheel is off the ground, no weight on wheel)
