Default Help! Lost clutch while riding. Engine just revs.

99 FXD twin can 88 with SE 211 cams, big air cleaner, big fuel jets, big pipes. I ride it like I’m trying to blow it up. Clutch dumps off the line, WOT, and rev limiter on every shift. And I cruise it around 3500 rpm.

While riding a couple days ago, my clutch lever engagement point slowly started getting farther and farther out…meaning if I barely pull the clutch lever in, the clutch disengages. I took it for a short ride today, I went full throttle off the line, up through 4 gears, and stopped accelerating around 70mph. After maybe 5 seconds of holding the throttle steady, the clutch slipped, the bike slowed, and the rpms increased. I eased off the throttle, and regained clutch engagement. I throttled up again to test it, and the same thing happened. I was able to get home.

Im hoping someone who knows more than me could point me in the right direction, and save me some diagnosis. I haven’t pulled the derby cover or checked the adjustment screw yet. I do have a FSM.

Thanks in advance

How much free play is there in the lever? You might get away with just adjusting your cable. I'd start there. Look up the procedure in your manual, it's pretty straight forward.
If that doesn't do it you probably need new plates.

Big air cleaner, big fuel jets, big pipes.

Everyone knows you need a big clutch.

Or stop riding like an idiot.

First off what Dan said.
Why in the world would you hit the rev limiter on every shift. Do you enjoy riding with acceleration drop off? Rev limiter is there to protect the engine, not a reference point of when to shift.
As far as the clutch goes, yea a proper clutch adjustment would tell if that is enough or you need a new clutch from burning yours up. More HP, hard take-offs, and stock clutch are not a good mix.
I've never seen a clutch cable shrink, and a stretched cable would not allow you to disengage properly, not slippage.
Wish you the best.

It could be that you smoked your clutch. It could also be that your clutch adjustment lock-nut came loose and the clutch went way out of adjustment. Time to take off the derby cover and see what's going on.

It's as if riding like that causes an increased risk of breakage and increased wear on components

Lemme rephrase; I shift right BEFORE the Rev limiter. I’m just trying to give details on riding style to narrow down what could be the issue.

But thank you everybody. I’ll get into it soon. Freeplay adjustment and jam nut adjustment are easy. I’ll start there.
