Well. Call me surprised. Battery completely dead. Replaced then tested stator. 25 to 46 vac. Good. Plugged in regulator. 13.60 idle. 14.15 high rpm. Respectable.
Autozone battery. Hear bad things about them.

You are probably fine. But if I would have went to the trouble to test the stator, I would have reved it up 80 volts or so. Should be around 20 volts AC per 1k rpm. DC should rev up to around 14.4 DC. You are probably close enough on that too. Didn't rev high enough, your meter, or good connection.

Did you try charging the battery at all? I would have done that first thing, to see if the issue is battery or charging system. By putting a new battery in, you don't really know if it went dead because battery is bad, or charging system is bad. You are probably ok though

Yes. The battery was toast. The backfire, I'm sure, was caused by the the battery failure. Just odd at the time.

Did you put it on a charge to see if it was bad? Probably was.
